Blushing is a confusing disorder because really, all blushing is, is a "signal flare" from the nervous system telling us that "something" is wrong. Then it becomes our job to find out what that "something" is. It could be social anxiety, poor digestion, and in very rare cases carcinoid syndrome. In this hypnotists case, "Susan the Blusher" changed his previous preconceptions about what blushing was and how to treat it with hypnotherapy. Here is a portion of the article:
"For most of us, blushing only occurs when we are extremely embarrassed. If someone catches you out in a lie, in public, for example - it is quite normal to blush. The strange thing about chronic blushers however - is that it often seems to happen back-to-front. In other words - the blush happens first, and is then followed by a feeling of embarrassment ( caused by the blush ).
When I first started helping people with this problem, I assumed a psychological cause - in other words, that the 'feeling' preceded the actual blush. This was because some of my clients had particular psychological issues ( as we all have !). Cognitive behavioural therapists act on the assumption that Facial Blushing is connected with Social Phobia. My own similar mistake was to assume that the blushing response was mainly an expression of such underlying feelings.
